Project 2 – Mirroring, Homage, and Imitation:

About Cindy Sherman (research)
-she is the youngest of five children
-both parents were not involve with art
-Dali and Picasso
-gave up painting

Her photographs show her dressed up in wigs, hats, dresses, clothes unlike her own, playing the roles of characters.

There is the archetypal housewife, the prostitute, the woman in distress, the woman in tears, the dancer, the actress, and the malleable, chameleon-like Sherman plays all of these characters.

At times, Sherman employs dolls parts or prosthetic body parts to substitute for her own and many a scene is strewn with vomit, mold and other vile substances.

She has been married to video artist Michel Auder for over 16 years and has found time in her busy career to add work in motion pictures

In 1999 the average selling price for one of her photographs was $20,000 to $50,000, a hefty sum for a female photographer.

These women are again simply types - The Personal Trainer, The Ex-Realtor, The Divorcee, etc. Sherman further manipulates the notion of portraiture through the use of conventional portrait signs including the setting of the figure against a neutral background.

Deconstruction – Reconstruction Project

Here is a demonstration of how my object works.

Here is some pictures of my object.

Here are some pictures of how my object look like before its deconstruction.

Images of taking the objects apart.

Here is the circuit board.

Here are the nails and the components.

System Concepts
Open vs Closed systems
My system is more of an open system. I have to interact with it by moving the handle. The cube turns around and rotates depending on where I turn it.
Non-Summativity or 'Wholeness'
There are different parts to the objects; the object has sound, movement and sensor to it. All of the attribute of the object works together to perform the task of the game.
Interdependence
My object has some interdependence to it. If the sensor of the object didn’t work than the movement of the object wouldn’t change. However, the sound doesn’t really affect the object as much. It doesn’t really effect the movement or the sensor. On the other hand, the only thing that will effect the object is that you don’t know when it starts or what level you are at.
Heirarchy
The cube is the main part of the object that hold everything together.
The next important part is the blue handle and circle (it active the rotation of the object). Also the speaker and the motion detector.
The gears, red button and rectangular parts of the gears are the next important part.
Lastly, the circuit board and all or its components and the nails.
Decomposibilty
The object can't be broken any more from the cube and the components of the circuit board.
self regualtion , control and homeostasis
The object is more self regulated than the player(s) having control over it. Once the player(s) start the game it will rotate by itself. The only control the player(s) got is holding the handle and moving it around.
Interchange with Environment
The only change the environment is the sound that it make. It can annoying to hear the sound of the game.
Interface
When you click on the start button it will start making noise(begin the game). If you click on the restart than it will turn off. Another input and output that it have is the batteries. If there are batteries than everything can run or else it won't work.
Balance
The batteries is the thing that keep the game in balance. Depending on how much batteries the game will work accordingly.
Change and Adaptability
Many of the parts of the object are adaptable. The motion sensor can be use to sense where the object is. The gears help with the motion of the object. The speaker make sound for the object. All of these part can be use separately, but with this game it all plays a certain role to make the game work.

BFA Documentary -Candy Theme

So for my BFA show I'm going to do stuff with candy. I'm going to try to make

-a collage movie clip of people singing the lollipop song...it is randomize (people won't see the same people or part of the people every time it loop)...clips of people will be shown (ex. one person will say lollipop, and than someone else will, and so one...

- a rug made out of m&m...and it will spell out "Home SWEET home"...it will be lay on the candy wrapper so it won't stain the floor and be able to be roll up.

- a sculpture out of skittles... I'm thinking of making a chair or two and maybe a table...people can also make their own (since I will leave a sort instruction on how to make things out of skittles)

- a chandelier out of gummy bears and fish wire...the use of fishing wire is so people will think that the gummy bear is just supporting each other with nothing attached...there will also be lighting of some sort to make shadows of the bears

my proposal got approve, so I am going to start working on it.
------------------------------
September 12, 2009
I found the music I am going to use on my video

However, I want to video tape people singing the song. And I know that many people don't know the lyrics, beside lollipop, so I try to find the lyrics. I found a karaoke video of the song.

This will help the people I will record, because they can sing along to the song at the same time I am recording them. However, I want to try to used the music track of the first link and combined it with the video track of the second link.
Reasons #1: The music track of the first link sound better, even though they have the singers singing it
Reasons #2: The video track of the second link will help people sing the song
Reasons #3: Combining two good things = better
-----------------------------------------------------------
September 22, 2009
I finish combining the two video

I want to try recording the video using iMovie. One reason why I think using iMovie would be convenient is that I can ask people to record them self and than just send me the file. I will provide instruction in how to shot the video and stuff.

I made a sample video and send it to my brother, who live in Ohio. It is a sample video and instruction video.

September 27, 2009

I found the artist name that inspired my idea for this candy theme project. Her name is Liz Hickok. Her first learn about her during one of my previous project, Jello World. She portray San Fransisco with jello.

This idea of making artwork out of food always linger in my mind. So I want to learn more about her and her work.

October 27, 2009

So I have been getting people to sing the lollypop song. It is really hard to get people to sing. Many people get embarrassed of singing, so they won't sing. Some people say that they can't sing, so they too won't sing. However, some people did sing when I let them sing by themselves and/or say that it is okay if they don't sing well. Either way I have to find out a way to make more people sing.

I thought of some stuff to do:
-make a booth
-ask a class or two
-ask friends to ask their friends and so on
-get people drunk

Beside the song project, I start researching on how to make the sculpture. I am going to experiment on how to solidify it and make it strong.
-For the skittle sculpture, I am thinking of testing five process of solidifying it: freezing, refrigerating, room temperature, microwave, and hair drying.
-For the m&m, I am thinking of hair drying it, put it in room temperature, and put it in the microwave.

--------------------------------------------
October 30, 2009-November 2, 2009

Here are the list of techniques I used in making the skittle sculpture.

Blue skittle: bite it, smash it, combine it - freeze it

Green skittle: I put it in my mouth and bite on it. Then I get it out and smash it. Lastly I combine it. - put it in the refrigerator

Pink skittle: put it in a cup of water and then get it out and smash it. Then I combine it together. - put it in room temperature

Red skittle: I lick the skittle and than smash it together. Then combine it together. - microwave it

Purple skittle: I smash it up first and than get it lick it too make it wet and then combine it together. - hair dry it

Review:
Freezing: After leaving the skittle in the freezer for a couple of weeks I took it out. The skittle stick together really hard. However, it seems fragile. It seems like a Popsicle, because it is hard but if you add enough pressure than it will break.

Refrigerator: After leaving the skittle in the refrigerator, for the same amount as the one in the freezer, it seems to stick together well. However, it seems like it can be taken apart.

Room Temperature:
Microwave: I put it in the microwave for 30 second on high and it melted. The skittle does have a stronger bond together, but the shape of the skittle changed.

Hair Dry: Hair Drying the sculpture sort of melt the skittle together just like the microwave technique. However, the skittle doesn't change its shape. Therefore, it is pretty good. The bond is strong and the shape doesn't change.

For the m&m
-Hair drying the m&m did not melt the candy onto the wrapper as I hope it would.
-Heating the candy in the microwave doesn't melt the candy either. All it does is crack the candy and melt the chocolate inside but not into the wrapper.
-I am keep the last set in room temperature, but I don't think it is going to work either.

I am going to think try to sew it into the wrapper with the fishing line. Or something that will make it stick to the wrapper.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
December 7, 2009

I have recorded about 30 videos so far. I have found a flat screen TV and a DVD player that I will project my video on. And now I am deciding how I would put it in the gallery to not get it stolen. I am thinking of building a case to put the TV and DVD player in. However. before I make it I will try to find a case that is already made. I am thinking of a box, like the one I see in the mall, with a plexiglass. This will let people only see the screen and not the object that is playing the video. I might need speakers to project the sound if the DVD player is not loud enough.

I am also starting to make my skittle project. I just brought about 150 oz of skittles. I decide to use the hair drying techniques, because it is the quickest and the skittles stick well. I found a chair that I will model the sculpture after. After the chair is done I will try to make a table.

I have also decided to combine my M&M with fishing line. I haven't tested it yet. However, if it doesn't work than I will just use the fishing for the gummi bears.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
December 12, 2009
So I started to make my skittle sculpture. I decide to use one bag at a time and separate the color of the skittle. I also separate the skittle that are combine to each other. The combine skittle will determine the order of which color I will use first. If no color is combine then I will just use the order of which color I pick up first.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
December 19, 2009
I am facing some trouble with my skittle sculpture. When I reach a certain height the sculpture slowly go down. I think the weight of the skittle is not as strong like I thought it would be, so I stop heating it with the hair dryer. I try to freeze it and refrigerate it but that didn't help. Because the sculpture would fall down before it freeze.

I find out that the skittle have a bit stronger bond when I still keep some of its outer shell attach to it. The sculpture also glitter a bit due to the sugar and this make it looks a bit nicer then when it is melted together.

Since combining all of the skittles at once make the sculpture not as strong, I decide to separate the sculpture in parts. I still kept the original piece which I started out with, but the skittles from now on I would combine them with similar color and and smaller parts.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
January 3, 2010
I started on my m&m project. I try to poke a needle through the candy but every time i did it the candy broke.

I even try to heat up the m&m but that didn't help. However, as it broke and the chocolate inside melt on the wrapper it seems to stick. I am going to leave it a outside a bit to test if it really stick or not.
The demension of the project is due to wrapper size. Since I brought a box of m&m, which contain 48 packs in it, i decide to make the demension of the project 16 wrappers by 3 wrappers.
And each letter I am going to spell on the project will be 15 m&ms by 15 m&ms. The long length of the wrapper can have about 20 m&ms and the width can have about 5 m&ms on it.

The video project is in progress. I only got about 3 new videos clips. However, some of my previous have a minor problem. As I was looking through it I notice that for some reason it jumps and skip a part. So I decide to look back at the originals and notice that it was the originals clips that skipped and missed a part. I can't really do anything about it since it was the originals video that got mess up. This just make me more careful to my upcoming video. The good thing is that the parts it skipped was really minor.

My skittle on the other hand is getting really hard to accomplish. I thought that the skittle was going to be strong enough to mold. However, it tend to collapse slowly. I am also trying to build it in parts, but that didn't help it from collapsing. So I been leaving it out more to let them dry out, because I notice as the skittles get left out they get harder. Hopefully this will help.

--------------------------------------------
January 4-14, 2010

I finally finish with one project. The m&m project is done. However, there was some issues that I faced when working on the project.

I did some test with how much to heat the m&m in the microwave. I started with heating the m&m in a small bowl for 30 seconds. The m&m was hot enough to be smash and melt into the wrapper. I try increasing the heat to 60 seconds, to see if it help the m&m melt easier. However, it burn and the chocolate gets too hot and don't melt.

I use a bigger bowl the following days. The main reasons was because I can heat up more m&m. Another reasons, is that I found out the smaller bowl I was using wasn't microwaveable and it got a crack in it after I use it a couple of times. I heat it for 30 second, but it was not hot enough to heat all of the m&m. Some of them were not able to melt, so I increase the heat too 60 seconds. However, the problem with this is that after a couple of time my microwave heat temperature changes and it gets hotter. This make all of the m&m after heat up faster. The problem with this is that when the m&m gets too hot it doesn't melt, instead it burn.

My first try in solidifying the m&m with the wrapper was a disaster. After melting the m&m on one whole wrapper I decided to heat it one more inside the microwave to make it melt one more time and make it combine with each other to make a stronger bond. However, the m&m got too hot and melt right through the wrapper.

Therefore, I decide to just tape the wrapper together and melt the m&m once onto the wrapper. Smashing the melted m&m onto the wrapper does keep the m&m onto the wrapper. The bond is somewhat strong, but if the melted m&m doesn't have contact with the wrapper then it doesn't stick.

It took me about one hour to finish one letter. And I had to go out to the store to stock up on more m&m a couple of times. I didn't want to buy too much m&m.

--------------------------------------------
January 20-22, 2010

I started on the gummy bear chandelier. I try to model my work out of one I took picture of.

I cut the fishing line to about 6-7 feet, tape the end of the string, and then hang it on the ceiling.

I wanted to test out to make sure it can hang down and won't fall off. I duck tape the end to the wall, assuming that it is strong enough to hold the gummy bears.

However, the gummy bears are too heavy for the duct tape to hold and it fell down. I try looking for places to hang the candy throughout the house, so I can work on it. The only place that I found was the vent. I knew that I can hang it there, before I started, but I didn't want to hang it there because I was afraid that the candy would melt.

--------------------------------------------
January 28, 2010

I found an artist online, Ya Ya Chou, who uses gummy bears and made the same thing I am trying to make.

I didn't know that someone else have the similar idea as me, but it is pretty cool.

I am also looking through sites to see how I can finish my skittles project. Here is a cooking recipe in which I will try. However, this would mean that I would completely melt the skittles.

--------------------------------------------
February 1-8, 2010

I finish the DVD project.
First, I crop each videos into the same length of the edit version of the lollypop song.
Then, I crop each video clips into a one second clips.
Next, I compine one second clips from each video clips in sequential orders.
However, I make it into a different clips after about 40 second.
I made (so far) 6 [total length] different videos clips {each have 3 clips}.
Lastly, I randomize all of the clips and that produce the ever-running video.

I also try some new methods with my skittle project. I try heating it with a heat gun. I got the idea from my friends and professor. The ideal image was for it to heat the skittle and then solidify it. However, that didn't really help. It did cool down and get hard, but it didn't get strong enough to hold itself up.
Therefore, I am going to have to make the sculpture in parts. I am going to mold the skittle into the parts I want it to look like and then freeze it. I did one test: freeze one part for about 12 hours and then took it out to see how long it will take until it dissolve (it melt down after 2 hours). So for now, I am just going to freeze each parts until my gallery show.
I am thinking of some alternative ways to display the skittle sculptures to help it from disintegrate. I am thinking of hanging them, putting them inside some transparent freezing box, or attaching it to the wall.

--------------------------------------------
before March 1, 2010

1. I froze all my skittle parts
2. I went to home depot to buy robes, screw hooks, and color light bulb
3. I went to Frys to buy a digital picture frame. (I might use it for my show to present the skittle sculpture after it melt down)
4. I borrow a flat screen TV
5. Connect all the wires together: TV, VCR player, and dvd player.
6. Invite people to my shows. I send emails, Facebook, Myspace, and posting.
--------------------------------------------
March 1, 2010

Today is the first day of my art gallery show. I set up everything except the skittle sculpture. I know that the skittle sculpture would melt, so I want to display it on Tuesday.

I saw a couple people went in. And I brought some friends to check it out.

We discuss if I should leave the gate open or lock. I want people to go in to check it out even when I am not there, but my friends think it is unsafe to leave the TV and other electronic there. I know that they could be stolen, so I lock it in the back. And in order for someone to steal it, they would have to carry all three electronic device out with the wire dangling.

--------------------------------------------
March 2, 2010

So today I set up my skittle sculpture. It didn't last long. After 30 min of being display, it melt down. I got lucky that I took some picture when it still look like a chair.

I display it around 10 am. After it collapse, I only see a bunch of color shapes. Therefore, I think I will use the digital picture frame to show people, who come afterward, what it look like before.

Here is a long video clip, in which I speed up (a lot) to make it short. This will show how the skittle collapse throughout time.

Many people was surprise that I use skittles to make the chair. Most people couldn't tell that it was made from skittles.

Many people told me they like the m&m and gummy bears. I let people walk over the m&m, if they wanted to. To my surprise, the m&m didn't stick on people shoes. Once in a while you could hear a crack or something.

Many people was tempted to take a bite of the gummy bears. Therefore, I encourage those who wanted to to take a bite. A few people try to take a bite, but only one person was able to consume one gummy bear from the fishing wire.

The following pictures are some random pictures from the show.

The hardest thing for me was saying, "Thank you". I am not used to hearing compliment from other. :p

--------------------------------------------
March 3-4, 2010

Here is a short clip of how it look like on Wednesday.

Here is what it look like on Thursday.

--------------------------------------------
March 5, 2010

After going through all of this work, it feel good to rest. The planing and getting everything to work is difficult. I knew it was going to be hard, but I still stress out. I was scare that people won't like what I did. However, at the end I got a few compliment. This made me happy and not scare anymore.
